Ever heard of Cuil (pronounced “cool”)? If you haven’t, you can check it out today. It’s a new search engine and has received more than its fair share of introductory fanfare. While Google undoubtedly has nearly 80% of the search engine market securely under its very wealthy belt, Cuil is believed to be capable of bringing up some heavy competition to Google in the long run.
That’s just an opinion offered by about 30% of web users who actually know about Cuil at the moment. However, it’s hard to imaging the giant falling down so easily. Cuil does have an impressive interface and presentation layout, but it’s going to take a lot more than a few gimmicks to surpass Google.
There’s more. Microsoft plus Yahoo - yes, the “big deal.” Isn’t it possible that the merger of two established brands would create more competition to Google than some unknown newbie? We’ll just have to wait and see if the deal goes through and if it’ll be able to go beyond their current estimate of 17% of the market.
